■ Wayuu Mochilaって？

Wayuu Mochilaと呼ばれるこの色とりどりのバッグを作っているのは、コロンビアとベネズエラ国境付近に生きる先住民Wayuu族の女性たち。
異なる柄と色一つ一つには、彼らの文化や生活様式にまつわる意味が込められおり、バッグを通して伝統が語り継がれています。
色彩豊かで多種多様な柄、これら全て、Wayuuの女性達が一つ一つデザインし、すべて手作業で編んでいきます。ひとつのバッグを完成させるのに20日ほど、より複雑なものであれば、一ヶ月かかることもあり、抜群の色彩感覚と手業のセンスはお見事、そして、 コツコツと丁寧に編んでいくその姿には知性すらも感じられます。
Wayuuの人々にとって、編み、織りは、”知恵 知性 創造"の象徴とされ、女性達は日々編むことでその感性を磨いているのです。
伝説によると、ワレケルと呼ばれるこの編みの伝統技法は、不思議な力を持った蜘蛛がWayuuの女性に手ほどきしたと言われており、その技法はWayuuの女性たちの手業によって伝承されています。



■ 母から娘へ受け継がれる編みの技法

Wayuu族にとって、女性はバッグを編めるようになって一人前と見なされ、Wayuuの女の子は、若いころから、代々伝わる編み方をお母さんから教わっていきます。そして成人期に達すると、より複雑なパターンに取り組むため、更に高度なかぎ針編みの技法を習得していきます。編むことは、"知恵 知性 創造"の象徴。Wayuu女性の知性ある佇まいには、そんな背景が隠されています。



■ Wayuu Mochila Storeがしたいこと

2014年秋、Wayuu族との交流を通して、彼らの素晴らしい手しごとに出会いました。その時のハッとするような、まるで恋でもしたかのような気持ちを今でも忘れません。
Wayuuの人々は通常、五、六の家で構成された小さな集落で生活し、その集落内では代々受け継がれてきた独自の言語や伝統が保たれています。
しかし近年、貧困が原因で集落から大都市に移り住み、路上でこのバッグを売り生活を成り立たせている家族も多く見かけます。そういったWayuuの人々は、本来の彼らの伝統的習慣やコミュニティーから離れた暮らしをせざるを得ないというのも現実です。
彼らの暮らしにおいて、Wayuu Mochilaは、重要な生活道具の一つ。円筒形のこのバッグは、深さもあるし、空っぽの状態でも自立できるほどとても頑丈にできているので、彼らが外出するときはいつも一緒。Wayuuの人々にとても重宝されています。
長年使っても擦れた感じが出ない上、丈夫で収容力も抜群、そしてそのデザインの良さから、近年、海外セレブやモデル達も愛用するなど、ファッション界でも密かに注目を浴びています。
今や、Wayuu族のバッグは、彼らの生活様式や文化を伝承していく手段だけでなく、彼らの生活を支える一つの手段。

■ What’s Wayuu Mochila?

The unique and colourful bag called Wayuu Mochila is made by indigenous Latin American Wayuu women from the Venezuela- Colombia border regions.
Each design incorporated into every bag is different, telling a story through the bag's colours and patterns.
These unique bags are handmade and it can take up to 20 days to complete one single bag and if it’s more complex pattern, it can take a full month.
For Wayuu people weaving is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence and creativity. Wayuu women cultivate sensitivity by weaving from day to day expressing their intellect through their individual diligent work.
These bags represent their age old traditions with using amazing colour and skills.
According to legend, the tradition comes from "Wale´kerü", a mystic spider that taught the women how to weave their creative drawings into the bag and the technique has been handed down by Wayuu women from one generation to another.


■ Technique handed down from mother to daughter

For Wayuu people, women are considered to be full-fledged when they master how to weave a bag. As young Wayuu women come of age, they start learning how to creat Wayuu Mochila bag from their mother.
When they reach adulthood, to tackle more complex patterns, they learn more techniques.
Weaving is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and creativity for Wayuu people.


■ What Wayuu Mochila Store wants to do

In the autumn of 2014, we came to Wayuu village where we found great handcrafts and hand skills.
Wayuu people usually live in small villages which consist of five to six houses. They still keep their own language and traditions which have been passed down from generation to another and has become a very important means to preserve their way of life and culture.

However, in recent years, many of Wayuu people are driven by poverty into the big cities, where they can be found selling the hand crafted bags on the streets, far from their traditional way of life and community.

Wayuu Mochila bags are very practical and the Wayuu people always carry a bag when they go out.

Recently, Wayuu bags have started to become more popular in the fashion industry. The bags are cylindrical, comfortable depth, robustly made and are free standing, durable, excellent capacity and all beautifully designed.
